End of an Era

Since our animals are now at new homes, we are officially retired from raising Highland Cattle. However, we still enjoy hearing from our old customers to see how the animals we raised are doing. We look forward to hearing how our animals have provided success to their new owners.

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have purchased cattle from us since we began raising Highlands in 1988. We have met meny wonderful people and attended many National Highland Conventions around the United States. We have participated in many NCHCA meetings and regional shows. We also enjoyed working with our granddaughters and other young helpers to train cattle to participate in our regional shows. Both animals and young people have benefitted from these experiences.

We wish everyone much success and happiness in the future with raising Highland cattle. They are truly a wonderful breed!

Saying Goodbye to our Females

Last Thursday was a sad day as we said goodbye to our remaining beloved females. The cows, MC Maren, MC Buttercup, and MC Princess moved to their wonderful new home at Cobblestone Farm in Wisconsin.
The heifers, MC Jeanette and MC Lena also have a wonderful new home at Almosta Farm in Nebraska.

I am so happy and grateful that they've gone to such good homes with wonderful caretakers.

We have one yearling bull and a yearling steer available in the For Sale section.

Our condolences to Tom, Christie and Ashley Stodola of Corcoran Creek Cattle. They lost Marsh Creek Snowball to greener pastures recently. Snowball had a history of winning many awards, including Grand Champion Cow/Calf at the National Highland Cattle Show in Denver in 2005. Snowball had been the National Reserve Grand Champion Cow/Calf winner the previous year. Snowball had produced many champion calves throughout the years. Tom expressed that it was like losing a member of the family.

It's been a long cold winter

Our Minnesota winter seems to have been longer, snowier, and colder than normal. Here in Roseville, our home, we got snow, rain, and sleet on Christmas day. That left a frozen mess on the ground and on our roofs. Temps since have rarely been above freezing so additional snowfalls have just added to the pile.

At the farm in Mahnomen, MN the temps dipped to -36 for 2 days in a row. The Highlands have shelter so they get along just fine. They do like to get out of the wind but can be seen sunning themselves in the snowbanks after getting their fill of hay. The young stock also get a little grain each day to mature a little faster. Hopefully the weather will turn warmer soon and we look forward to our new calves arriving in April and May.

We are posting pictures of the animals we have for sale. These were taken last fall. New pictures will be added later.

We have had a busy summer so are late in posting pictures of this year's calves on this website. We have 1 heifer and 2 bull calves born in April and May. One of the bull calves is a full brother to Marsh Creek Ferdinand who was sold recentlly. The heifer is a daughter of a former regional grand champion cow.

His Drover Hill grandmother has produced many descendants that have the frosted coloring when young and it disappears as they get older. The forelock and tail switch may remain lighter.

Ten years ago, we launched our first Marsh Creek Highlands website. The site served us and our customers well for a long time. It helped us spread the word about the breed and our Highland herd in Northern Minnesota.

Years later, the internet has grown up, and so has our presence on it.

We have incorporated some all-new features in an updated design. We’re excited to introduce the ability to communicate through our blog. Slideshows are an especially nice feature to use, but you can still view the photos in the more traditional way. Some of the photos can even be downloaded for your use at home. For those web-savvy individuals that subscribe to other blogs, we’ve added an RSS Feed.

The new marshcreekhighlands.com will help spread the word about a truly great cattle breed and a family that’s proud to raise them. We hope you enjoy using our website as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.

Following is a testimonial given to us by Linn Reece of Honey Creek Farm in New Providence, IA:

“One of the last sons of Gilchrist’s Victor, Marsh Creek Victor’s William, was purchased as a six-month old bull calf. The sale was based on two things, first impression and pedigree study. Some would say buying a bull calf that young to sire and build a future herd is a foolish thing to do. Although eye appraisal is at best a questionable thing, pedigree study tells us reasonably well what we have a right to expect. The ultimate evaluation of him is based solely on the evaluation of his progeny.

As evidenced by our second herd made up almost entirely of William’s daughters, we made the right decision in the year of 2000 to purchase that small bull calf from Harris and Donna Viker at Marsh Creek. Length of body, powerful muscling, and a straight top line is evidenced in his offspring. Several of his calves have been sold throughout Iowa and Missouri.

William continues as our herd sire and each new crop of calves are a delight. He has never seen the inside of a show ring, but there is little correlation between ribbons won and ultimate breeding value as determined by progeny proof. William has with no doubt improved the genetics of our herd and provided us with a solid core of what we believe to be the proper type of Highland cattle.”

Halter Training

After they were clean and dry, our Granddaughters continued halter training the calves. They’re getting more comfortable all the time with each other. Hannah and Leah are making good progress, training the calves to set up their feet in the proper stance for showing.

Brushing & Bathing

Katie, Leah, and Hannah were busy scrubbing hoofs, lathering, brushing and rinsing. The girls are giving the calves baths in order to get ready for showing

Andana's Quinton

(1991-2007) - 1993 Highland class winner - National Western Stock Show

We purchased Quinton as a calf at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, where he placed first in his class. He came from the herd of John McKenzie Anderson, author of the "Grande Ole Breed" and a well-known Highland Breeder. Quinton was purchased to breed to Victor's heifers, which proved to be a very good combination. Quinton had great body depth and a wonderful disposition. He was the first to come when called, and was always eager to be scratched and brushed. He set a great example for the rest of the herd and we were extremely pleased with his offspring. His progeny won Get of Sire at the 1999 North Central Highland Show.
